The 29th Key West Songwriters Festival Turns Duval Into a Listening Room

The 29th Key West Songwriters Festival Turns Duval Into a Listening Room

For five days at the end of April, the biggest hitmakers in Nashville quietly trade their stadiums for bar stools in Key West. The 29th Annual Key West Songwriters Festival, running April 29 through May 3, books more than 200 country and pop songwriters across 50+ shows at venues from Schooner Wharf to sunset sails. These are the people behind the songs, and for audiences who know every lyric but have never heard a voice attached, the experience is a revelation.

The festival has launched household names — Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Jake Owen, and Florida Georgia Line all came through before their breakout years — and every festival is a showcase for next. Many performances are free; the premium tickets unlock writers' rounds, intimate sunsets with four songwriters passing the guitar, and the kind of backstage conversations that have quietly shaped country music for three decades.

If you're going: the official schedule drops about three weeks out. The Green Parrot, Schooner Wharf, the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater, and Irish Kevin's are reliable spots for the best free sets. Walk Duval — by the third day, you will not want to see a car.
